Tile Composition of Jesus Christ

Period: 18th century .

Dim: 56 x 42 cm (22.05 x 16.54 inch.)

This 18th-century tile panel, in blue over white, depicts a fragmented scene of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. At the center, Christ’s face is partially visible, wearing the crown of thorns, with an expression of suffering. The outstretched hands nailed to the cross and the presence of blood suggest the moment of the crucifixion. At the top, the inscription "INRI" (an abbreviation of Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum) identifies Jesus as the "King of the Jews." Although incomplete, the panel powerfully conveys the pain and spirituality of the biblical episode, characteristic of Portuguese religious tilework from the Baroque period.
