Single figure tiles, the term used to describe those that held an autonomous image, started being produced in Portugal in the last quarter of the 17th (XVII) century. Widely used in the first half of the XVIII Century, they started to replace pattern tiles. Inspired by Dutch works, these tiles repeated simple motifs such as flowers, people, animals, boats, houses or castles. They are naïve in style which strengthens the hypothesis that these were the first works of young apprentices.
