Altar topper – 18th century
Period: 18th century
Dimensions: 175 x 84 cm (68.9 x 33.1 inches)
Top of altar frontal from 1720-1760 made up of cut-out tiles. The composition is dominated by symmetrical volutes, shells, windings, plant ornamentation and floral elements. At the center is a symbolic motif in blue on a white background, framed by an architectural frame painted in yellow, manganese, blue and green, typical colors of Portuguese eighteenth-century production. The design reveals the influence of gilded woodcarving and the ephemeral architecture of the time, suggesting its original use as the top edge of a mural panel, possibly in a church, palace or manor house.
