Neoclassical Marian Panel

Period: 18th century .

Dim: 112 x 98 cm (44.09 x 38.58 inch.)

This neoclassical tile panel, dating from the late 18th century, presents a composition rich in symbolism and ornamentation. At the center, within an oval medallion framed by a gilded border with vegetal motifs, appears the image of a tower topped by a nest where a stork—symbol of maternal love associated with the Virgin Mary—feeds its young. The surrounding scene suggests a bucolic landscape with houses, vegetation, and mountains. The entire central composition is enclosed by an exuberant floral decoration featuring roses and volutes in pastel tones, typical of the refined and balanced aesthetics of Neoclassicism. At the top of the central image, on a blue ribbon, is the Latin inscription “Vis fortior arcet,” which translates as “The stronger force repels”—a possible reference to the protective power of virtue, of family, or of the tower itself. This type of panel was common in the interiors and façades of noble or religious buildings, reflecting prestige and culture.
