Record of Saints and Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception
Period: 18th Century .
Dim: 42 x 56 cm (16 x 22 inch.)
This tile depiction represents, in cobalt blue, three central figures in Catholic Christian iconography. On the left, Saint Anthony holding the infant Jesus in his arms, holding a cross in his right hand; in the center, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, elevated on a crescent moon, crushing the serpent—symbols of her purity and victory over sin. On the right, Saint Augustine, recognizable by his mitre and episcopal staff. This panel is a common example of devotional art in traditional Portuguese domestic and urban spaces of the 18th century.
