Patchwork Panel of Monochromatic Pombalino Tiles – 18th Century

Period: 18th century Dimensions: 49 x 84 cm Description:
A patchwork composition made up of Portuguese tiles in the Pombaline style, dating from around 1760 and executed in blue on a white background. These tiles were produced as part of the reconstruction of Lisbon following the 1755 earthquake, when the need to clad new buildings favored the use of modular patterns, which allowed for more systematic and economical production. Associated with the reconstruction program carried out during the reign of the Marquis of Pombal, they became known as Pombaline tiles. In this panel, various monochromatic floral and geometric patterns are combined in a contemporary composition, while maintaining the principle of repetition and modularity characteristic of Lisbon tilework from this period.
