Pombalino Tile Patchwork Panel – 18th Century

Period: 18th century Dimensions: 140 x 56 cm Description:
A patchwork composition made up of Portuguese tiles featuring patterns from the Pombaline period, dating from the second half of the 18th century. These tiles emerged in the context of Lisbon’s reconstruction following the 1755 earthquake, as part of the urban planning policies promoted during the administration of the Marquis of Pombal, hence the term “Pombaline.” Produced through the repetition of decorative modules, they made it possible to create wall coverings in a systematic manner adapted to the city’s new architecture. In this panel, various geometric and floral patterns are brought together in a contemporary composition, preserving the ornamental diversity characteristic of Pombaline tilework.
