Single Figure Tiles – Boats

Period: 18th century

Dimensions: 14 x 14 cm (5.51 x 5.51 inches)

The production of individual figure tiles became more diverse at the beginning of the 18th century, both in the design of the central motifs and in the composition of the corners. Among the most common motifs are flowers, animals, and, more rarely, boats. Mainly used for wall decoration, these tiles were made by apprentices, which explains their relative simplicity. The boat is a symbol of Portuguese culture, characterized above all by its maritime and Atlantic heritage.

Several examples available.
