The expression refers to the work *De Civitate Dei*, written by Saint Augustine in the 5th century, in which the city symbolizes the spiritual community of the faithful and the Heavenly Jerusalem, in contrast to the earthly city. Widely found in Christian iconography, this allegory represents divine protection, faith, and hope in salvation, giving the panel a strong religious and symbolic meaning.
