Organized by the repetition of a blue floral pattern on a white background and framed by an ornamental border, this type of tile was intended for the complete covering of walls in churches, convents, palaces, and stately homes. The modular repetition of the pattern made it possible to create large-scale decorative surfaces with a strong visual impact, making carpet-style tilework one of the most striking expressions of 17th-century Portuguese tile art.
