Pattern Tile Panel – Late 17th Century
Period: 17th century
Dimensions: 140 x 140 cm
Description:
A panel of Portuguese tiles in the P-503 pattern, according to the classification by J. M. dos Santos Simões, dating from the late 17th / early 18th century. The pattern features a large-scale composition consisting of 12 tiles and requiring eight different elements to complete the module, depicting plant motifs and scrollwork in cobalt blue on a white background.
Santos Simões identifies the P-503 as one of the most widespread patterns of this type, noting its presence in the Junceira Parish Church in Tomar, dating from 1714, and later in various buildings in the Alentejo, Algarve, and Madeira, including Nossa Senhora da Boa Fé, Nossa Senhora de Brotas, the Chapel of Santo António do Alto in Faro, São Sebastião de Tavira, and the Church of São Sebastião in Câmara de Lobos. The repetition of the module made it possible to create large, continuous panels, characteristic of Portuguese tilework from this period.
