Hispano-Moorish Tile Compositions – 15th–16th Centuries

Period: 15th–16th centuries Dimensions: various Description:
A collection of various compositions made up of Hispano-Moorish tiles from the 15th and 16th centuries, arranged in panels of various sizes. This art form developed in the Iberian Peninsula from the Islamic artistic tradition and remained particularly active in major pottery centers in southern Spain, such as Seville, even after the Christian Reconquista. The tiles feature stylized geometric and floral motifs in a palette of greens, blues, ochres, and shades of manganese. Many examples employ the “aresta” technique, in which the design was imprinted on the clay using a mold, creating small raised lines that separated the different glazes during firing. Originally used to adorn palaces, churches, and other architectural spaces, these tiles bear witness to the continuity and adaptation of the Islamic decorative tradition within the Iberian artistic culture of the 15th and 16th centuries.
