“Carpet” Pattern Tile Panel – 17th Century

A panel of 17th-century polychrome Portuguese tiles, comprising a section of 8 × 8 tiles from the P-999 pattern, whose complete module consists of 12 × 12 tiles. According to the classification and study by João Miguel dos Santos Simões, this is the pattern with the largest module in 17th-century Portuguese tilework; it was designed around 1620–1630 for covering large surfaces, and historical examples can be found in important Portuguese religious buildings. The composition features floral and geometric motifs in cobalt blue, yellow, green, and manganese on a white background, arranged according to a distinct rhythm of symmetries and diagonals, still related to earlier “caixilho” compositions. The repetition of the 12 × 12 module allowed for the creation of extensive continuous coverings, known as “tapetes,” in which the tile was integrated into the architecture through an ornamental composition on a monumental scale.
