“Stylized Floral Composition” – Jorge Barradas / Viúva Lamego – Mid-20th Century

Period: 20th century Dimensions: 70 x 56 cm Description:

A polychrome tile panel titled “Stylized Floral Composition,” designed by Jorge Barradas (1894–1971) and produced in collaboration with the Fábrica Viúva Lamego in the mid-20th century. A leading figure in Portuguese Modernism, Barradas began his career in drawing, illustration, and painting, devoting himself particularly to ceramics beginning in the 1940s. In this field, he developed his own distinctive style, applying his graphic and decorative sensibilities to tiles, sculpture, and various ceramic objects. In this composition, stylized floral and plant motifs are arranged through repetition, rotation, and symmetry, in a palette of blue, green, and brown on a light background. The work reflects Barradas’ interest in revitalizing the Portuguese ceramic tradition, reconciling the historical logic of patterned tilework with a modern, synthetic, and distinctly decorative style.
