Teak, a fine wood abundant on the west coast of India, particularly in the Goa region, was widely used in local artistic production due to its exceptional strength and durability, making it one of the materials of choice for religious imagery intended for Portuguese territories. Depicted standing, with serene expressions and robes of wide folds, these angels were intended to hold torches or candlesticks as part of the decoration of churches, chapels, and altars, and still bear traces of their original polychromy.
