Putto Atlante with a Basket of Flowers – 18th century
Period: 18th century
Dimensions: 74x162 cm
Eighteenth-century Baroque tile panel, painted in cobalt blue on a white ground. The composition features a putto atlante, a semi-nude child figure set on an architectural pedestal, holding above his head a basket richly filled with flowers and foliage. The figure has both an ornamental and scenographic function, simulating a sculptural support integrated into the fictive architecture of the panel. The motif belongs to the decorative repertoire of Portuguese Baroque tilework, characterised by theatrical framing devices, the expressive use of cobalt blue, and the creation of architectural effects in trompe-l’œil.
