Description:
A panel of Portuguese tiles from the reign of Queen Maria I, dating from the late 18th century, intended for a Marian shrine. The composition follows the neoclassical style characteristic of this period, featuring a palette of pastel tones—combining blues, yellows, greens, and manganese—and a decorative scheme of floral motifs, garlands, architectural elements, and surfaces with a marbled effect.
In the center is an oval medallion depicting a landscape painted in blue and white, dominated by a tree, above which appears the Latin inscription “NON LAEDITVR VNA” (“Only one remains unharmed”). The motto refers to the symbolic tradition of the laurel tree, which was believed to be immune to lightning strikes; in this context, it takes on a Marian interpretation linked to the incorruptibility and preservation of the Virgin Mary from original sin. The combination of image and inscription thus allows us to understand the central scene as a Marian allegory, integrated into the decorative language of late 18th-century Portuguese tile art.
