Tile Panel with Albarrada – 17th Century
Period: 17th century
Dimensions: 70 x 84 cm
Description:
A 17th-century Portuguese tile panel, painted in cobalt blue on a white background, depicting a floral arrangement in an ornamental vase. In the center stands a vase decorated with overlapping scales, from which flowers, leaves, and branches extend in a symmetrical arrangement. The scene is framed by a border of plant motifs and scrollwork, characteristic of the 17th-century ornamental repertoire.
The tradition of “albarradas” developed in Portuguese tile art beginning in the 17th century and continued throughout the 18th century, with various stylistic interpretations. Inspired by depictions of vases with flowers, these compositions were used to decorate churches, convents, palaces, and other architectural spaces, often appearing as freestanding panels or integrated into larger wall coverings. Their widespread use coincided with the growing importance of floral motifs in Portuguese tile art, particularly in blue-and-white compositions.
