Marble Baptismal Font in the Shape of a Shell – 20th Century

Period: 20th century Dimensions: 30 x 22 cm Description:
A 20th-century marble baptismal font, carved in the shape of a shell, with a fluted surface and a wavy rim, replicating the natural features of a seashell. The piece features a cavity designed to hold water, with a drainage hole, and a mounting bracket on the back for attaching it to the wall. The use of the shell in sacred art is associated with water and the symbolism of baptism, and it is a recurring motif in the design of baptismal fonts and holy water fonts. This type of piece was part of the decoration and liturgical furnishings of churches and chapels, combining religious function with the sculptural tradition of stone carving.
