Tile Panel with Balustrade and Putti – 18th Century

Period: 18th century Dimensions: 70 x 84 cm Description:
An 18th-century Portuguese tile panel, painted in cobalt blue on a white background, depicting a balustrade with flowers and fruits, flanked by two putti kneeling on pedestals. The central composition is framed by architectural elements, volutes, and scrollwork, and is bordered by a spiral border, characteristic of the Baroque ornamental repertoire. Albarradas—decorative compositions centered on vases with floral arrangements—were one of the recurring motifs in 17th- and 18th-century Portuguese tile art. In this example, the combination of the albarrada, the putti, and the architecturally inspired ornamentation reflects the influence of the Baroque style, which used sculptural and botanical elements to structure ceramic tiles and integrate them into the decoration of architectural spaces.
