Narrative Panel Depicting a Construction Scene – 18th Century

Period: 18th century Dimensions: 196 x 56 cm Description:
An 18th-century Portuguese tile panel, painted in cobalt blue on a white background and framed by a rocaille border. Given its horizontal composition, it was likely designed to be incorporated into the lower portion of a wall covering, serving as a frieze or band. These panels were often designed in series, depicting different episodes of the same narrative sequence. The scene appears to depict a stage in the construction of a bridge. In the center, a temporary wooden structure can be seen, associated with the crossing or construction over the watercourse, while on the left stands an architectural structure already built of masonry. In the foreground, a stonemason is working on a block of stone, directly evoking the construction process and the transformation of the wooden structure into a permanent stone structure. The depiction of labor and architecture is set within a landscape framed by scalloped motifs and scrollwork characteristic of the 18th-century rocaille style.
