Tile Panel Depicting Cephalus and Procris – 18th Century

Period: 18th century Dimensions: 182 x 98 cm Description:
This figurative tile panel , created in Portugal in the mid-18th century, depicts the conclusion of the mythological story of Cephalus and Procris, as told by Ovid in *Metamorphoses*. Consumed by jealousy and convinced that her husband was secretly meeting with a nymph named “Aura”—in reality, the cool breeze that Cephalus summoned during his hunting expeditions—Procris decides to follow him and hide among the vegetation. Upon hearing a noise, Cephalus mistakes it for prey and throws the infallible spear that Procris herself had given him, striking her fatally. The composition depicts the aftermath of this episode, with Procris reclining and Cephalus by her side, while two putti hover above the scene. One of them carries a torch, a traditional symbol of love, which in this context takes on a particularly symbolic meaning: in the face of the tragic outcome, the flame simultaneously recalls the bond of love that united the couple and its fragility in the face of jealousy and mistrust. The image thus encapsulates the moral dimension of the narrative: even a deep love can be destroyed when trust gives way to suspicion.
