Composition of Sponge-Decorated and Marbled Tiles – 18th Century
Period: 18th century
Dimensions:
Description:
Contemporary composition created using original 18th-century Portuguese tiles, featuring sponge-applied decoration in various shades of green, blue, manganese purple, and yellow. The tiles display marbled surfaces, achieved through the irregular application of pigments over the glaze, creating chromatic effects that evoke the veining and textures of natural stone.
The composition revisits the tradition of enxarquetados, associated with Islamic-influenced geometric tilework, in which ceramic elements of different shapes are combined to create decorative coverings. In this example, the historical tiles have been arranged in a geometric pattern of diamond-shaped pieces and smaller connecting elements, establishing a dialogue between 18th-century ceramic production and contemporary interpretation. The present arrangement highlights the original materials through a new composition, while preserving the chromatic and technical characteristics of the 18th-century tiles. Are you interested in this product?
