Earthenware Figures of Roosters and a Hen – Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, 19th Century
Period: 19th century
Dimensions: 42 cm; 52 cm.
Description:
Set of three zoomorphic figures in polychrome earthenware, depicting two roosters and a hen, produced in Caldas da Rainha during the 19th century as part of the ceramic production of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1846–1905). The pieces bear the “snake” mark, associated with the production of the Caldas da Rainha Faience Factory. The birds display naturalistic modeling, with particular attention to anatomy, the texture of the plumage, and the expressiveness of the figures. Set on bases depicting plant motifs and straw, they stand out for their use of glazes in shades of yellow, brown, green, and red.
Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, a Portuguese artist known for his work as a caricaturist, illustrator, and ceramicist, founded the Caldas da Rainha Earthenware Factory in 1884, where he developed a body of work that sought to elevate decorative ceramics to the status of an art form. Linked to naturalist movements and the trends that would come to characterize Art Nouveau, his ceramic work explored forms inspired by fauna and flora, emphasizing the observation of nature, sculptural modeling, and the chromatic effects of glazes. Are you interested in this product?
